NASA has delayed its crewed lunar landing to the Artemis IV mission in 2028, repurposing Artemis III in 2027 as a technical demonstration of landing equipment (Eos, The Journal of Space Commerce). To reach the lunar surface, both SpaceX and Blue Origin will now utilize distinct trajectories; SpaceX will dock its Starship lander with Orion in Earth orbit before firing engines for a lunar transfer, while Blue Origin will employ three transfer stages to reach an elliptical polar orbit. NASA officials emphasize that these uncrewed demonstrations are essential for testing cryogenic engine performance and regolith interaction in the South Pole environment.

China has simultaneously formalized its own lunar ambitions, targeting a crewed landing before 2030 using a lunar-orbit rendezvous method (Ars Technica). Unlike the Apollo-era architecture, China will launch its crew and lander on separate rockets to compensate for the lack of a heavy-lift vehicle comparable to the Saturn V. Meanwhile, infrastructure development continues as JAXA explores solar power tower designs for lunar high latitudes, aiming for deployment in 2030 to support the growing power requirements of long-term surface exploration (The Journal of Space Commerce).
