Global capital is flowing away from pure software toward capital-intensive physical industries. Y Combinator’s 11 startup priorities for 2027 signal this transition by highlighting space infrastructure, robotics, and industrial energy systems (SEMIVISION @_@). This shift reflects a move from developing foundation models to building the hardware required to integrate AI into the real economy. For instance, LandSpace recently became the first Chinese commercial firm to land an orbital-class booster, while Unitree Robotics saw its revenue jump roughly 4.3 times in 2025 (Genuine Impact, Genuine Impact). Investors now prioritize startups that combine AI with physical operations, such as industrial automation and energy infrastructure, rather than just software agents (Parsers Venture Capital Insights). This trend requires founders to master domestic manufacturing and supply-chain logistics, which carry higher capital requirements than traditional software ventures.

China’s investment strategy demonstrates this scale, with R&D spending reaching RMB3.93 trillion in 2025, or 2.8% of GDP. Companies drive 77% of this expenditure, fueling deep clusters like Hefei for quantum technology and Shenzhen for hardware. The output is visible in the rapid minting of unicorns, with 80 new companies reaching billion-dollar valuations in the latest year—a rate of one every five days. While AI remains a core focus, the application has broadened. Chinese models now account for 41% of downloads on Hugging Face, yet the most valuable listed company on China’s A-share market is the memory maker CXMT. These developments suggest that regional specialization, where cities focus on specific hardware or industrial niches, is becoming the primary engine for high-growth startup formation.
European ecosystems are attempting to replicate this success through regional specialization and state-backed investment. In the Netherlands, Invest-NL and nine regional development agencies co-invest in startups, with academic spin-offs raising over one-fifth of all venture capital in 2025 (baby vc). Despite this, the region faces a scaleup gap; while it boasts 2.4 unicorns per million people, only 21.2% of its AI companies successfully transition into scaleups, trailing the European average of 31.1% (baby vc). To bridge this, the Dutch government launched Operation Beethoven, a €2.5 billion initiative to improve housing and grid infrastructure specifically to support giants like ASML. Founders in these hubs must now look beyond local venture funding, as US investors are increasingly participating in European breakout deals, joining 40% of such rounds in 2025 compared to 14% the previous year.
