Economic transitions now collide with physical infrastructure limits, particularly in electricity grids. In 2025, data centres accounted for 23% of Ireland's metered electricity, a sharp rise from 5% a decade earlier (Polis Doxa). This surge forced the Commission for Regulation of Utilities to mandate that new data centres address specific generation, storage, and network conditions before connecting to the grid. Such requirements demonstrate that digital investment decisions have become energy-infrastructure questions, as the digital market cannot resolve physical constraints on its own. When electricity delivery fails at a required location, the investment stalls regardless of available capital or technical expertise.
“The boundary of a government department, regulatory authority or business function is not necessarily the boundary of the economic mechanism it is trying to influence.”
Polis Doxa - The Transitions Letter
The mismatch between infrastructure capacity and demand creates significant waste. Britain spent over £1.5 billion by early October 2026 to curtail wind power because the grid could not transport the energy to where it was needed (Jonathan Maxwell’s Substack). This expenditure represents power citizens paid for but could not use. To resolve this, experts suggest that generating power closer to home and using less at peak times offers the cheapest path to grid stability. A data centre that flexes its demand at peak hours and shares waste heat with local buildings requires less from its neighbors and reduces the burden on the broader system.
Policy isolation often prevents effective transitions because departments manage specialized sectors without accounting for external constraints. Transition Science suggests that structural changes interact and reinforce one another, meaning an intervention in one market may fail if another market remains a bottleneck. Leaders now increasingly focus on measurable business value, such as the median return of $10 for every $1 spent managing environmental risk reported by CDP (Sustainability Simplified). By shifting the corporate focus from mere compliance to efficiency and resilience, organizations can better navigate the interdependence between industrial activity and the ecological systems that sustain it (Founders Factory Startup Bulletin A…).

Audit your facility or home energy usage to identify one peak-load reduction opportunity.
Track your hourly consumption for one day to find the single largest spike.
You need
- Smart meter or utility energy portal access
- Spreadsheet or notebook
- One week of historical usage data
Steps
- Download hourly electricity usage data for the last 7 days.
- Plot the data to identify the hour of highest consumption.
- Determine which device or process accounts for the majority of that spike.
- Create a schedule to shift that activity to off-peak hours.
- Document the projected reduction in grid demand.
